Overuse syndrome can mean any condition that overloads the patella or its attachments such as the quadriceps, patellar tendon, or patellar tendon attachment. These conditions occur when the stress of activities overloads the bodies ability to heal and recuperate causing inflammation. Often overuse syndromes such as jumpers knee (quadriceps tendinitis), patellar tendinitis, and Osgood Schlatters disease (inflammation of the patellar attachment) are seen in adolescents during a period of time when they are constantly active.
Treatment of these conditions usually involves rest, activity modification, symptomatic care (ice, antiinflammatiory medication), and the stretching of antagonistic muscle groups, usually the hamstrings.
